MissKai - Back to Basics (DDJ Heavyweight Jazz Battle Entry) [April 2006]
The Digital DJs (www.digital-djs.com) decided to have a battle of the best 60 minute jazz radio show or mix. So here’s my entry…decided on some tracks that I think show a nice range in style, spanning over 50-60 years. Also chose some tracks from artists that are more so known for their work in other genres, just to show how jazz is such an integral part of music as a whole. I loved pulling the Beastie Boys “Sabrosa”, because so many don’t realize that they are actually talented & respected musicians. Also, took the opportunity to pull tracks from Hugh Masekela & Mulatu Astatqe, both known for their African jazz work, which is a genre that I am looking to add to my collection more. And lastly, I end with one of my favorite jazz pieces from a good friend of mine, Monica Dillon out of New Orleans.
So take a listen & hopefully you’ll enjoy & begin to see what jazz is to me…
