From: Yoga workshop aims to help singers
As vocalists, both Robin Earl and Eve Fleishman know that there’s more to a good performance than a strong voice. The entire body works to deliver a song that will really connect with the audience. So Fleishman, who is also a certified yoga teacher, decided to create a yoga workshop especially for singers, one which the breathing techniques and physical demands of yoga are used to help singers establish a mind-body connection. In its third year, the workshop will take place 1-4 p.m. Saturday, June 20, at Sanctuary for Yoga, 3902 Hillsboro Pike. The workshop is designed to improve posture and alignment, strength and flexibility, and breath flow. Earl, who will teach this year’s workshop, is a professional vocalist and private voice coach. She has taken yoga for 10 years and has found it helpful to both her singing and her teaching. “Yoga strengthens the ‘core’ trunk muscles that are so important to a singer’s support,” Earl said. “It also helps with posture and alignment issues, tight neck muscles, rounded shoulders. Singing is a whole-body activity, not just from the neck up. Having good posture and alignment is key. “Some singers breathe high in their chests and have frequently run out of air, while others breathe too low and have restricted rib cages. Learning yoga breathing technique is very helpful in helping singers coordinate their breathing in a natural and efficient way that can easily connect to their support.” Fleishman said past students liked the combination of sound and movement, and how the movements relieved stress. “The more vocalists can be in tune with their bodies, the better chance they have of giving a performance that resonates with their audience,” Fleishman said. “Yoga is a meditation which not only strengthens our muscles but also helps us relax. Singers know that feeling at ease on stage goes a long way towards the successful delivery of a song.” The workshop cost is $60.
